Cold process needs less equipment than people expect, but two items are not negotiable and one is usually bought wrong. Start with the scale, because soap is formulated by weight and a lye figure that is out by two grams changes the whole batch: you want resolution of 0.1 grams, a capacity of at least eleven pounds so a loaded pitcher of oils still reads, and a tare button you can hit with one hand. Second, protection. Sodium hydroxide solution splashes and it is caustic at working strength, so reusable nitrile around fifteen mil thick beats a box of thin disposables, and the eye protection has to be a sealed splash goggle rather than safety glasses, which are open at the sides where a splash actually arrives. The item bought wrong is the blender. Any immersion model with a stainless shaft will bring a batch to a stable emulsion, and low wattage is fine because you pulse rather than run it continuously, but a plastic shaft distorts in hot oils. Round out the bench with a graduated pitcher with a spout for lye water, a one piece silicone spatula that has no seam for batter to hide in, a probe thermometer covering roughly one hundred to two hundred degrees Fahrenheit, and a lined mold sized to the loaf you want to cut.
