Hot process
Cooking soap batter after trace until saponification finishes, shortening the wait before use.
Hot process soap making uses the same oils and lye as cold process, but after reaching trace the batter is cooked, traditionally in a slow cooker or double boiler, until saponification is visibly complete. The batter passes through a translucent, gel-like stage before thickening into a texture often compared to mashed potatoes or petroleum jelly.
Because the cook finishes the chemical reaction in the pot rather than over weeks in the mold, hot process bars can typically be used much sooner than cold process bars, though many makers still let them firm up for a short period. The rustic, textured surface is a recognizable trait of the method.
The faster reaction means less working time for detailed swirls or thin, precise layers compared to cold process. A common mistake is not cooking the batch long enough, so pockets of unreacted lye remain, or overcooking it until it becomes too thick and lumpy to pour into a mold cleanly.
